The Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany will reopen June 15 to eligible military personnel, their families and other approved guests.

Military Resort Germany

Officials with the Armed Forces Recreation Department, which operates the facility, say reopening is a top priority for health and safety reasons. Edelweiss Resort must adhere to host country and military guidelines and will continue to monitor the situation for any potential changes.

Tropical Islands Resort

Initially, Edelweiss Resort will only accept bookings from customers residing in Germany. In addition, the maximum occupancy of 50% of the hotel's 258 rooms is limited. The resort operator plans to expand eligibility to all approved guests due to circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 permit.

Glass partitions have been installed at the front desk and main areas. Hand sanitizing stations have been installed at all entrances and restaurants. Employees are provided with appropriate protective equipment and trained on new standards and expectations related to hygiene, cleanliness, social distancing and safety.

Guests are required to bring their own masks for use in public areas and adhere to physical distancing guidelines. Authorities also encourage guests to use credit cards to make purchases or charge room fees to minimize cash transactions.

"We are really looking forward to providing our military members and their families with another wonderful vacation," said Brian Borda, general manager of Edelweiss Lodge and Resort.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is an American Defse-owned resort hotel located in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Located in the Bavarian Alps near the Austrian border, the facility opened in September 2004 at a cost of $80 million.

In accordance with international agreements, use of Commissary, Community Bank, and PX/BX is restricted to personnel assigned to U.S. Forces Europe and NATO ID holders with these privileges. Edelweiss Lodge and Resort was built to replace the former AFRC (Armed Forces Resort) hotels (Geral Patton Hotel and Gerald von Steub in Garmisch-Partenkirchen). Other hotels in AFRC holiday history include the now demolished Hotel Geral Walker in Obersalzberg.

After World War II ended in Europe, the former German military hotel and resort complex was taken over by the US Army and used as an R&R center for the soldiers stationed there. This old hotel has served this purpose for many years, but is no longer up to par. In the spring of 2000, the U.S. military and members of Congress approved plans to build a state-of-the-art resort hotel in the Bavarian resort town of Garmisch-Fatkirch. After the completion of the new hotel, AFRC-Europe closed AFRC-Chiemsee (the Seehotel was the former Reichsautobahn service station "Rasthaus am Chiemsee" during the Nazi era)

) and the Geral Patton Hotel in Garmisch-Partkirch, the remaining AFRC facilities in Garmisch-Partkirch were merged under the new Edelweiss Lodge and Resort. Edelweiss Lodge operates the Edelweiss Holiday Village and Campsite in nearby Artillery Kaserne, west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. These facilities include luxury lodges and cottages in the Loisach River Valley.

They offer daily guided tours of the Dachau concentration camp, Neuschwanstein Castle, Partnach Gorge, Ettal Church and more.
